He oversaw an $18 million annual expense budget and a $5 million capital expense budget. He supervised approximately 120 skilled craftsmen, supervisors, engineers, operators, and laborers. Among his notable accomplishments, Wayne:
- Pioneered an innovative team approach to realize energy savings at the company’s Evansville operations. Working with selected vendors, Wayne led his team to $1.5 million in annual energy savings. For its innovative methods and extraordinary accomplishment, the team earned the 1995 National Energy Award from the U.S. Department of Energy.
- Led a team for developing and implementing a computerized maintenance management system. This project entailed the development and data entry of 20,000 inventory items, 4,000 pieces of equipment, and 10,000 pages of procedural text.
- Was responsible for the continuous operation of a steam generation-and-distribution system, including ancillary feed water and controls. The system consisted of 3 coal-fired boilers and 3 gas-fired boilers generating in excess of 200,000 pounds per hour of high-pressure steam for manufacturing operations and heating buildings. Through systematic, planned approach to operation and maintenance, the boilers far exceeded life expectancy according to industry standards.
- Implemented an aggressive training program to educate craftsman on the impact of repair behaviors and attitudes on maintenance costs.
